Moldova officially begins accession negotiations with the European Union

Moldova has made significant progress on its path toward joining the European Union. On March 3, 2022, the country submitted its official application for EU membership. Later that year, on June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Moldova the status of candidate country.

In November 2023, the European Commission recommended the opening of accession negotiations, which was followed by a formal decision from EU leaders in December 2023. The first intergovernmental conference between the EU and Moldova took place on June 25, 2024, officially marking the start of accession talks.

Despite major challenges — including the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine and hybrid attacks targeting Moldova — the country has shown strong commitment to reforms. The EU has emphasized the importance of continuing reforms in rule of law, justice, and fundamental rights, with special focus on comprehensive judicial reform and anti-corruption efforts.

The European Union remains a key partner in supporting Moldova’s integration efforts, providing assistance aimed at strengthening the country’s resilience, security, and economy. This collaboration is intended to bring Moldova closer to EU standards and shared democratic values.
