How does the Bulgarian healthcare system apply to foreign workers?

Depending on their length of stay and status, third-country nationals have different rights and obligations regarding their health insurance status. Those holding a long-term or permanent residence permit are entitled to healthcare services under the same provisions as Bulgarian nationals. This means they can access services such as consultations with general practitioners, medical treatment in healthcare facilities, various medical examinations, and preventive check-ups.

Foreign students and postgraduate students studying in Bulgaria who have permanent resident status in the country are also entitled to medical care under the same conditions as Bulgarian nationals. They can rely on the state healthcare system for medical treatment and examinations.

For third-country nationals staying in Bulgaria for a shorter or extended period without long-term resident status, medical services are not covered and must be paid for out-of-pocket. The cost of examinations, tests, or prescribed treatments is determined by the respective medical institution. In addition, they must have valid health insurance or a policy covering medical care and hospital stays. If they do not already have this type of insurance, they must obtain it upon entering Bulgaria.

Without health insurance, individuals are responsible for covering the full cost of medical treatment in Bulgaria, including consultations, tests, hospitalization, and other medical services.
