Non-EU citizens wishing to work as employed workers in Bulgaria can find information below on the conditions to fulfil, the procedures to follow, as well their rights during their stay
Nationals of Moldova and Georgia
The Agreements allow Moldovan and Georgian nationals to work in Bulgaria without the need of a work permit, but with a mandatory residence permit (applicable only to the category of workers employed under a contract of at least one year).
Employed workers
Prior to the worker’s arrival, the employer must apply to get approval for issuance of a single permit by the Employment Agency. Once the single permit is approved, the worker must apply for a type D visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in the respective country.
Highly-qualified workers
Prior to the worker’s arrival in the country, the employer must submit an application for an EU Blue Card to the Employment Agency. Proof is required that the gross salary in the employment contract is at least 1.5 times higher than the average salary in Bulgaria.
Seasonal workers
Seasonal work permits are issued exclusively for the sectors of tourism and agriculture. The seasonal worker permit is valid for a maximum of 9 months. Upon arrival in Bulgaria, the employer must register the worker’s position in the local Labour Office Directorate of the Employment Agency.
Self-employed workers
Self-employed workers need a freelance/self-employed work permit, type D visa and a residence permit. Permanent residence may be granted after a 5-year period of legal residence. During this period, the individual must not leave Bulgaria for more than six consecutive months or a total of 10 months.
